Recipient Reactions to Aid: Literature Review and a Conceptual Framework.

Abstract

A working paper first presents a detailed review of past research on recipient reactions to aid. The review explicates the previously established relationships between the array of situational characteristics which may be associated with aid, and the resulting reactions of the recipient. Next, the theoretical frameworks previously used to predict recipient reactions to aid are considered in terms of their rationale and conditions basic to prediction. Each of the theories is evaluated in terms of its range of application for prediction of recipient reactions to aid. Finally, a unified and comprehensive formulation for conceptualizing and predicting recipient reactions to aid is proposed.
