A Review of Techniques for Measuring Small Optical Losses in Infrared Transmitting Materials,

Abstract

The authors review some recent developments in techniques for measuring small absorption coefficients in the infrared spectral region. This paper considers thermal methods such as thermocouple, optical and acoustic calorimetry as well as some direct loss techniques including laser differential attenuation measurements and emittance spectroscopy. The various methods are compared on the basis of sensitivity and ease of implementation; advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed. Some consideration is given to methods for separating surface, bulk, and scattering losses.
