Wideband Intermediate Laser Amplifier Techniques.

Abstract

This contract falls in the area of laser radar transmitter technology, since it was an engineering study of a wideband intermediate stage laser amplifier, using laboratory hardware, to verify predicted performance, and arrive at a conceptual design for a practical device. This type of amplifier is needed for the implementation of several types of high resolution laser radar systems. The amplifier would be capable of amplifying frequency swept synthetic imaging radar waveforms of microseconds duration and 500 MHz sweep extent, generated by a master oscillator, to a level sufficient to drive a laser power amplifier. The conceptual design resulting from this study calls for a 200 torr laser gas pressure, a pulse/RF gas discharge ionization/excitation technique, and a closed cycle, flowing gas, transverse discharge, transverse cavity laser configuration in order to meet the waveform amplification requirements.
