Basic Research in Dynamic Sealing.

Abstract

Progress on the development of instrumentation for dynamically measuring pressure, temperature, and film thickness without disturbing the flow field in a mechanical face seal test facility is reported. The fabrication techniques and progress in probe developments of both a pressure transducer and a non-pentrating inductance probe for direct measurement of the local thin film clearance are reported. A summary of the interfacial wear studies using electron microscope examination of surface topography and subsurface microstructure is reported for several materials of interest in mating surfaces of mechanical face seals.
