Sea Wave Spectra Derived from Airborne Radio Altimeter Measurements.

Abstract

The results of a preliminary investigation into the accuracy of sea wave spectra derived from measurements of the sea wave encounter spectrum, are presented. The basic measurements require an aircraft equipped with a radio altimeter and tape recorder, with some available means of calculating the motions of the aircraft in a vertical plane. The predicted spectra are compared with those derived from wave measurements using a Datawell Waverider buoy. A FORTRAN program to carry out the processing of results is included.
