Implementing a Nonstandard Data Type.

Abstract

The design of a software package for manipulation of a nonstandard data type is discussed, starting with determination of the mathematical properties of the abstract mathematical system to be approximated, and progressing through the theoretical properties of the approximation, the interfacing of the package with existing languages and language processors, and the internal structure of the package. The principles are illustrated by applying them to the design of an interval arithmetic package to be used with FORTRAN. The thrust of the paper is primarily tutorial.
