Griffith Fracture Equation - An Experimental Test.

Abstract

The Griffith Fracture Equation was not followed when the strengths of rods of soda-lime glass tested immediately after abrading and after abrading and then aging 24 hours in water were compared. The aged samples were stronger than samples not aged, but the cracks in both were of nearly the same length. Two possible explanations of this discrepancy are explored.
