Effect of Automation on Clinical Laboratory Testing Times.

Abstract

Delays and bottlenecks in hospital patient treatment, occurring in the laboratory services, amy be reduced by automating the specimen transport to the laboratories and/or automating by computer the within-laboratory processing and the return of results. A computer simulation of such an automation was conducted for the Naval Hospital, San Diego, for 26 patient sources and five major laboratories. Results indicate that 'clinlab' time from patient to laboratory and back can be markedly and cost-effectively reduced by automation. Recommendations include computerized accessioning, computerized processing control in certain cases, computerized analysis, remote hard-copy display of results in wards, transitubing specimens, automated quality control, computerized compiling and filing of results, and automatic flagging of unusual test results.
