High Average Power Diode Laser Illuminator.

Abstract

This program was to develop a high power cooled Gallium Arsenide laser system of 1/2 degree x 1/2 degree field of view without encountering the severe heating problem associated with the fiber optic approach. Through the use of a crossed cylindrical optical system and a spray type cooling assembly, the 30 watt power objective was achieved. A growth potential to about 50 watts is indicated without significant modifications. 100 watts appears feasible with modifications. By limiting the initial cooldown rate, it appears that a significant increase in system operating life is achieved.
