A Multistation Sampled Data Acquisition and Transmission System for Studies of ULF Waves.
Abstract
The development of a multistation sampled data acquisition and transmission system designed for studying the longitudinal extent and propagation characteristics of ULF waves (.001 to 2.5 Hz), observed on the earth's surface, is presented. A one-error correcting Hamming code with bit interleaving among the codewords in the same transmission block is shown to provide adequate protection against the errors introduced by noise in the telephone line which serves as the communications link among the stations. The implementation of the automatic sampling of the analog magnetometers, the encoding and decoding of the data, and the generation and detection of pseudo-random sequences for synchronization, using integrated circuit technology and microprocessors is briefly described.
