Pulmonary Cellular Toxicity of Cadmium.

Abstract

There are numerous instances of accidental industrial exposure to cadmium fume which have resulted in severe respiratory damage. Some of the survivors were later shown to have severe emphysema of the centrilobular type which suggested that animals given an appropriate exposure of cadmium by inhalation would provide a reproducible model of emphysema. Three groups of rats were exposed to the aerosol on 5, 10 and 15 occasions respectively and were killed at two hours, 3 days and 10 days after the last exposure. In summary, exposure of rats to cadmium aerosol, of an amount roughly equivalent to one pack of cigaretts in man, produces a marked wave of cell proliferation and a delayed wave of increased dehydrogenase activity. The mechanisms inducing these changes are presently unclear.
