'Solenoid' Assembly for Obtaining Superstrong Magnetic Fields (Ustanovka 'Solenoid' dlya Polucheniya Sverkhsilnykh Magnitnykh Polei),

Abstract

The 'Solenoid' assembly for obtaining superstrong d-c magnetic fields has been in operation in the P. N. Lebedev Institute of Physics for more than a year. Two methods are used to obtain superstrong d-c magnetic fields. The first consists in passing a strong current through a coil which is cooled by some kind of liquid, the liquid usually being water. This method requires large amounts of electrical energy. The second method, which is based on the use of a superconducting solenoid, is free of this shortcoming, as only small amounts of power are needed. However, the first method was selected.
