Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors Model Study. Report 1. Prototype Data Acquisition and Observations.

Abstract

This report describes the instrumentation, operation, calibration, and collected data of a 1-yr prototype wave, tide, and ship movement data acquisition program conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station and is the first of a series to be published under the general title 'Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors Model Study.' This model study has four major objectives: (1) to determine incidence and severity of troublesome oscillations in the present harbor complex, (2) to investigate tidal circulation characteristics of the present and proposed harbors, (3) to determine the optimum plan for future expansions to provide safe and economical berthing areas, and (4) to analyze the effect proposed expansions will have on existing harbors. The first two objectives require very accurate and reliable prototype data.
