Luminescence Due to the Recombination of Free Atoms.

Abstract

Spectrophotometric analysis was used to determine the conditions for selective population of a single electron state in nitrogen. Pressure was found to have no effect on the population distribution in the pressure range studied. Two types of distribution were noted, a Boltzmann distribution for all levels and a characteristic distribution for three levels, and the possible causes for these distributions are examined.
