Development of Large Rare Earth-Cobalt Magnetis for Microwave Tubes.

Abstract

The program's objective is to extend the application of rare earth-cobalt magnets to large microwave tubes by adapting the existing technology to provide highly uniform, high energy product permanent magnets in sizes up to 3 inches in diameters. In large sizes, the cost of magnet material fabricated from Sm-Co is often prohibitive. Therefore the development of lower cost magnet materials was pursued. The weight and cost savings, along with systems improvement to be realized with the availability of these large magnets, were demonstrated by developing magnetic circuit designs for microwave tubes now using larger or more costly methods of magnetic focusing.
