Harmonic Motion of Cylinders in Uniform Flow.

Abstract

The time-dependent force acting on a cylinder undergoing harmonic in-line oscillations in an otherwise steady flow was measured for various amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation and mean flow velocity. The experiments were carried out in a recirculating water tunnel operating as an open channel with a free surface at the test section. The time-dependent force has been expressed in terms of a mean drag coefficient and the Fourier-averaged drag and inertia coefficients and as functions of the relative amplitude and a frequency paramter.
