Evaluation of Inertial and Laser Profilometer Systems.
Abstract
The study evaluated two profiling systems - a laser system and an inertial system, developed for the Air Force Weapons Laboratory for use in runway roughness studies. The laser system produces an absolute profile that is accurate to 0.085 inches in 1000 feet. Using this system, three technicians can survey a 10,000-foot runway in 1-1/2 to 2 hours. The inertial system provides data usable only between the nominal wavelengths of 3 and 400 feet and is accurate to .014 inches in 400 feet. Two technicians using this system can survey a 10,000-foot runway in about 10 minutes. Profile data from both systems are suitable for use with a computer program for predicting the dynamic response of aircraft to runway roughness.
