Automatic End-On Fatigue Crack Measurements on Thick-Walled Cylinders.

Abstract

Thick walled cylinders exposed to repeated cycles of high internal pressure may fail by low-cycle fatigue. To develop design criteria and to set safe inspection standards, it is necessary to know not only the length, but the depth and shape of fatigue cracks. A technique has been developed for the accurate end-on measurement of crack depth using a normal beam ultrasonic probe. The accuracy and sensitivity are briefly described.
