The Hierarchical Ordering of Preference for Relations in Solving Verbal Analogy Items.

Abstract

Verbal analogy items were constructed consisting of an ambiguous stimulus word pair and two unambiguous response word pairs as choice alternatives. (Two relations are educible from ambiguous word pairs, but only one relation from unambiguous word pairs.) Both response alternatives were 'correct.' The items were presented to subjects in a counterbalanced design to discover if preferences exist between the two competing relations in each item. The data were analyzed to see if these preferences ordered themselves into a hierarchy.
