DOD Space Transportation System (STS) Command and Control Data System Study. Volume I -Study Summary

Abstract

This six volume report presents a Command and Control Data System (CCDS) concept for support of DOD Space Transportation System (STS) missions launched from VAFB or KSC. It describes the CCDS concept in terms of its functional control elements (e.g., Mission Control, Launch Control, etc.), their interfaces, and functional requirements for personnel, data processing, display, command/control, and communications. Candidate operating positions required in the Shuttle Mission Control Center to support STS missions are described and a sample annex to an Orbital Requirements Document (ORD) for the interim upper stage is presented. The joint use of the JSC Shuttle Mission Simulator (SMS) was investigated and the DOD SMS capability requirement determined. Budgetary cost and schedule estimates for a DOD SMS were provided based on NASA budgetary figures. This volume is the study summary.
