NVA Upper Air Temperature and Wind Analysis for a 12-Level European Area Model

Abstract

A numerical variational upper-air temperature and wind analysis (NVA) is developed for a 12-level non-staggered half-mesh grid for the European- Mediterranean area. The goal is to establish a computational concept and efficient relaxation method for solving the fourth order non-linear set of partial difference equations encountered in NVA by applying Euler's equation of motion to an atmosphere assumed to be in hydrostatic equilibrium.
