Final Report on a Service-Wide Survey of Attitudes and Behavior of Naval Personnel Concerning Alcohol and Problem Drinking,

Abstract

Information on alcohol abuse problems and attitudes in the U.S. Navy is provided in this report of a service-wide mail survey conducted at the request of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. The survey sample consisted of a total of 9508 persons on active duty in the Navy, including representative samples of male and female officers and male and female enlisted personnel. Data was gathered on various types of drinking problems among naval personnel, their attitudes concerning alcohol use, and their opinions on the scope of the problem of drinking in the Navy and on how the Navy might cope with alcohol misuse. The survey was modeled after recent nationwide civilian surveys, thus providing a basis for comparisons between civilian and naval personnel.
