Observation Methods for Human Dialogue
Abstract
This report describes progress on a new approach for improving man- machine communication. The goal of the work is to significantly expand and diversify the capabilities of the computer interfaces that people use. The approach is first to design computer processes that can assimilate particular aspects of dialogue between people, then to transfer these processes into man-machine communication. The approach requires that particular aspects of the human ability to communicate be selected and studied in detail. This report describes new methods of data collection developed to meet this need and tells how they will be used. The report focuses on nine phenomena of human dialogue which have been selected from approximately 23 phenomena proposed and explored. For most of the nine, explicit observational instructions are given as well.
