155MM XM198 Howitzer Muzzle Wear

Abstract

During the 155mm XM198 Howitzer Durability Test, several tubes showed high muzzle wear. The manufacturing and firing histories of tubes used during this test were investigated in order to determine the extent to which the tubes contributed to the problem. Several 'fired-out' tubes from the test were cut up and studied in order to gain a better understanding of the mechanism of muzzle wear. It was found that all tube material properties and significant manufacturing specifications had been met.
