Mossbauer Spectroscopic Studies of the Passivation of Cobalt

Abstract

In situ Mossbauer studies of the anodic behavior of cobalt in borate solution at pH 8.5 showed that:(1) Co(OH)2 is formed at the surface for anodic potentials between -300 mv. and +200 mv. (vs. S.C.E.); (2) a hydrated cobaltic hydroxide, CoOOH, is formed at potentials above +200 mv.; and (3) the outer surface is oxidized to a +4 valence state during anodization in the transpassive region above +500 vm.
