A Concept of Despin Mechanical Assembly Life Testing Involving Total Characterization.

Abstract

The critical requirements placed on the performance and life of moving mechanical assemblies in spacecraft demand the ultimate in reliability. Confidence levels must be established by testing units over time intervals that are significantly shorter than their intended application life. A concept of total mechanical assembly life testing through comprehensive instrumentation for early detection of system degradation is presented. Testing criteria and appropriate measurement techniques are discussed. On the basis of this approach, an advanced technology test program was initiated in 1972.
