High Voltage Pulser Techniques for Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Simulators.

Abstract

This report presents the results of both theoretical and practical investigations aimed at improving the performance of a number of key components that are common to many EMP high voltage generators. The advantages of component redundancy over attempting to achieve extreme individual component reliability are outlined. Common capacitor faults are discussed together with methods of their detection and techniques for circumventing a failed capacitor in a Marx generator. Marx switch faults and timing irregularies are also discussed. A specific design for a high voltage fuse for use in Marx generator circuits which was developed and tested is presented. A cascade high voltage ropeswitch is discussed.
