Study of the Relationship between Electromagnetic and Elastic Properties of Solids and Fluids.

Abstract

Three approaches to the central problem are discussed. The first is an unsuccessful attempt, which however provides a useful critique of projection operator techniques. The second is only a partially successful approach, through the use of a semiphenomenological model of a dielectric. The third, which is described in some detail, constitutes a successful approach and yields a very general and rigorous connection between the elastic and electromagnetic tensors of a very general model of a solid.
