Auroral-Ionospheric Variability,

Abstract

The report discusses various types of auroral conditions which occur frequently and are not necessarily associated with substorms. Specifically, a description of good quality photos is presented for the purpose of illustrating specific points considered significant for interpretation of the photos in terms of ionospheric structure. These photos include extremely quiet conditions as well as extremely disturbed conditions; also included are observations of midday auroras and of auroras in the presence of moonlight. Emphasis is placed on relating auroral patterns to ionospheric structure.
