VELA Network Evaluation and Automatic Processing Research

Abstract

The report presents the final results of the continued evaluation of the capability of the single Very Long Period Experimental (VLPE) station, the VLPE network, and the VLPE-ALPA NORSAR combined network to detect and discriminate between presumed underground explosions and shallow earthquakes located in Eurasia. Presented is a summary of the important results pertaining to the studies of long-period earth noise, and the application of matched filters and the Three-Component Adaptive processor to VLPE data. The evaluation was conducted by Texas Instruments Incorporated at the Seismic Data Analysis Center over the period 1 November 1973 to 30 November 1974.
