Power Systems Study.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to consider the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) effects on a regional electric power system and to provide a set of recommendations to enable power systems to reduce their susceptibility to EMP. One of the initial tasks was the identification of potential disruptions and damage to electric power pool systems. By means of literature reviews, electric power companies visits and facilities inspections, potential gross generation, transmission, and distribution subsystem susceptibilities were identified. Due to system size and complexity, specific hardening needs for the entire system have not been identifiable. Hence, brute hardening of power systems is not recommended. Furthermore, it is not considered cost effective.
