Mesoscale Wind Shears Derived from Thermal Winds.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, during the period August 1973 through March 1974 to test the validity of the hypothesis that the thermal wind equation is valid on the mesoscale. Data from nearly three hundred radiosondes were edited and analyzed. The results indicate that the hypothesis is true except in the vicinity of the tropopause. Details of the editing and analysis procedures are presented in the paper along with the results.
