New Thermodynamic Relationships Among the Physical Constants of Liquids,
Abstract
From phenomenological considerations of the structure of liquids, a series of formulas can be obtained which gives quite satisfactory values of the chief characteristics of normal -- nonassociated -- liquids at some distance from their critical points. It is sufficient to determine the density of a liquid at two different temperatures and to know one other physical constant of the liquid under consideration (for example, the isothermal compressibility or the heat of vaporization) in order to obtain directly eight principal characteristic constants (ten if the molecular weight of the liquid is also known). These characteristics are: the specific volume, coefficient of thermal expansion, isothermal compressibility, internal pressure, difference of heat capacities, internal and total latent heats of vaporization, temperature coefficient of pressure, temperature coefficient of the vapor pressure, and the attraction constant.
