AFQT: Historical Data (1958-1972)

Abstract

The purpose of the study was not only to indicate changes in the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) values, but to identify as well the factors that effected such changes. Data presented cover 14.5 years, and relate to preinductees who were selected by the Selective Service System for first time examination to determine their moral, mental, and medical fitness for military service. 'Preinductees' replaces the term 'draftees' used in previous studies. The study provides detailed data on distribution by mental category Mean Percentile AFQT scores, by race and geographic area. The racial and geographic differences, with respect to distributions by educational attainment (years of school completed), over the 14-year period relate to the United States as whole.
