Transient Calorimeter Calibration System

Abstract

Null point calorimeters are used to measure heat flux levels in excess of 15.0 kW/per sq cm in arc heated re-entry wind tunnels. To augment these measurements at the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory a calibration system and a transfer standard was developed. The system generates heat flux densities up to 10 kW/per sq cm within a 0.25 in. square target zone using a xenon arc radiation source. The absorptivity of calorimeter surfaces to this radiant source is measured with an accessory apparatus to yield a calibration accuracy of 5%.
