The Influence of Reynolds Number on the Normal-Force Characteristics of Slender Cylindrical Bodies,
Abstract
Measurements have been made of the normal force and center of pressure of cylindrical bodies of revolution with ogival noses at Mach numbers from 0.5 to 4.0, and at angles of attack up to 25 degrees to investigate the influence of the boundary layer on the normal force characteristics of slender bodies. The Reynolds numbers based on model diameter varied between 150,000 and 5,000,000. By changing the stagnation pressure of the wind tunnel and by changing the scale of the models the Reynolds number at a given Mach number could be varied by a factor of about 8. In addition, the tripping of the boundary layer was studied. The experimental data are compared with results of computational methods.
