Gas Motions in the Center of the Galaxy NGC 253 from HI Line Interferometry,

Abstract

An interferometric study of HI 21cm line absorption against the central radio source in NGC 253 has yielded an excess of blue-shifted velocities, which is best interpreted as absorption in neutral gas moving towards the observer away from the nucleus, in confirmation of optical studies. While all molecular studies show a feature red shifted relative to the systemic velocity, the present HI study hardly shows any signal at the same velocities.
