Comparison of Strategies in Numerical Integration of a Nonlinear Advection Equation.

Abstract

The simple, nonlinear time-dependent advection equation (Partial of du/dt) + u(Partial of du/dx) = 0 --in which the dependent variable u(which may be considered a velocity) is a function of time (t) and one space dimension (x)--is used as a framework for the comparison of a number of computational strategies. Second and fourth order schemes, with differing boundary conditions, are examined and compared with an analytical solution. Among those schemes which can be applied in practice, a fourth-order scheme--in both time and space--is the most desirable from a number of different aspects.
