Recent investigations on the use of automation to realize the twin objectives of cost reduction and reliability improvement for computer programs developed for the U. S. Air Force are reported. The concepts of reliability and automation as they pertain to software are explained. Then, over twenty automated tools and techniques (aids) identified by this investigation are described and categorized. Based on the information reviewed, an assessment of the state of the technology is made. Finally, specific recommendations which try to give direction to future efforts are offered. (Author)
