Experimental Investigation of Single and Counterstreaming Ion Flows in the Presence of Magnetic Fields.

Abstract

Present ion flow experiments differ from previous measurements in three significant respects. These are: (1) The use of pairs of electron emissive probes for direct determinations of turbulent electric field magnitudes (as compared to the use of a single probe). (2) The examination of ion flow at non-normal incidence to the magnetic field (previous experiments utilized transverse magnetic fields). (3) The use of signal averaging techniques for measured densities and potentials for injected density wave motion across field lines (thus eliminating impact from turbulent electric fields).
