Subject Matter and Media Preferences for General Military Training.

Abstract

A sample of 129 male enlisted personnel were questioned about which subject matter areas and media they preferred in GMT, as well as the frequency with which they had received various GMT programs in the past, and the interest and usefulness which was associated with these previous GMT programs. They generally reported preferences for subject matter areas which emphasized career benefits, but these preferences differed according to the age, enlistment status, and rating of the subject personnel. Frequency of GMT programs is apparently related to the operational status and commitments of local commands, as well as human resource requirements emphasized by higher authority. While half of the GMT subject areas accounted for over 86% of the presentations that were made, these presentations were not related to the interest or usefulness which the recipients reported for these areas. Of the specific media used to present these previous GMT programs, the men reported an overwhelming preference for group discussion, with film being the least preferred.
