Boating Accident Investigation Seminar Proceedings.

Abstract

The intent of the Seminar was to provide information concerning the need for detailed recreational boating accident data in the development or improvement of present and/or future standards and education programs. The most common accident types (collisions, capsizings and swampings, and fires/explosions) were reviewed. The methodology used for in-depth accident investigations was presented in detail. The Seminar contained three typical accident investigations with a step-by-step analysis of each accident. Included throughout were human factor and psychological elements in operator performance capabilities. Two days of the Seminar were used for laboratory and in-the-water participation with the attendees examining boats, engines, fuel systems, etc., and handling boats underway.
