Visor System Materials for Aluminized Firemen's Hoods (Report 2: Evaluation of Gold-Coated Plastic Substrates).

Abstract

The Navy Clothing and Textile Research Unit became concerned with the poor durability characteristics of the gold-coated facepiece component of the crash-crew firefighter's visor system and established a program to identify the problems associated with the facepiece. Several experimental transparent plastic sample materials were obtained uncoated, gold coated, and gold coated and overcoated with different types of protective overcoatings and evaluated to determine the following: Heat transmission characteristics of the uncoated transparent plastic substrates; heat transmission characteristics of the gold coatings with and without the different types of overcoatings on the transparent plastic substrates; durability characteristics of the coated materials.
