The Instrumented Neutrally-Buoyant Float Program at Columbia University.

Abstract

Instrumented neutrally-buoyant floats were used in a series of experiments performed over a number of years starting at the Hudson Laboratories of Columbia University in 1957. This report reviews the scientific motivations for such experiments along with the continued instrument development required. Most of the scientific aspects of this work have been reported in previous publications by the author but little has been presented on the type of instrumentation and on the methods of acquiring and processing data. One of the purposes of this review is to present essential details of those experimental aspects.
