Mechanical Power Package for Aircraft Utility Functions, Power Controller Development.

Abstract

The utilization of kinetic energy stored in a high-speed flywheel for actuation of airplane utility functions required a device for converting unidirectional input rotation to selectable bidirectional output rotation. This program was initiated to develop a lightweight device for this purpose. A spring clutch concept was selected for development. Clutch engagement was accomplished at input speeds to 8686 rpm with limited output shaft inertia. Although uniform acceleration was attained, material problems encountered preclude satisfactory engagement at the desired load. Endurance relative to use in low inertia applications was not demonstrated due to these material problems.
