Fabrication and Testing of Sapphire Filament Reinforced Superplastic Ni-Cr-Fe Alloy Composites.

Abstract

Experimental efforts to fabricate composite samples of a Ni-Cr-Fe alloy reinforced with Al2O3 filaments are described. Sapphire filament/polystyrene layup sheets were sandwiched between sheets of Incoloy 809E matrix and consolidated in a vacuum hot press under conditions at which the matrix demonstrated superplasticity. The resulting samples were evaluated metallographically and, where possible, mechanically for completeness of consolidation. Although the feasibility of consolidation was demonstrated without the use of photochemically etched positioning grooves in the matrix, liminitations of the technique were identified and found related to the hot press die design and load applying components and well as the variability of the sapphire filaments.
