Beams on Nonlinear Foundations.

Abstract

The solution of a beam on an elastic nonlinear foundation by the Finite Element Method is presented in this thesis. Discontinuous (Winkler) and continuous foundations are considered. The general formulation is based on the Galerkin method. The solution technique for the linear case uses Gauss elimination and the solution technique for the nonlinear case is based on Brown's method (a modified Newton-Raphson). Some illustrative examples are presented. A brief comparison of continuous and noncontinuous foundations is made.
