Evaluation of Selected Refractories as High Temperature Thermophysical Property Calibration Materials.

Abstract

Two materials, tungsten and an isotropic graphite, were selected out of a list of twenty-two materials for more detailed evaluation on their reliability for being a high temperature thermophysical property reference standard. High temperature thermal property and electrical resistivity measurement results from an expanded international measurement program are presented and compared which involved 18 laboratories, nine in Europe and 9 in the U.S. It was concluded, that the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the graphite were known within + or - 10% and + or - 6% respectively while for the tungsten the corresponding inaccuracy bounds for both properties were + or - 5%. Specific recommendations are given for further experimental and analytical studies with these two calibration materials.
