Optimal Design of Reliable Systems.

Abstract

Any decision about how to design for a given level of system reliability carries with it cost implications and an obvious consideration in the design of a system is how to optimally allocate the available resources in order to achieve the reliability requirements. This is the type of problem considered in this paper. Specifically this paper will focus upon the problem of how to optimally choose component reliabilities in order to minimize the cost of designing and manufacturing the components subject to a lower bound on the system reliability and upper and lower bounds on the component reliabilities.
