On Learning Maps

Abstract

This report describes a study of how maps are learned. Subjects studied a simple map under various conditions and then answered questions about the map and drew the map from memory. It was found that: (1) Local relations are learned before large-scale relations; (2) Different types of map information must be presented simultaneously for effective integration; (3) Reading a story relevant to the map is more helpful in remembering the map than spending the same amount of time copying the map.
